Putting protein into perspective

During digestion, protein in food is broken down into the 20 amino acids that are the basic building blocks our bodies use to create its own protein. Our bodies need protein to maintain our cells, tissues and organs. A lack of protein in our diets can result in slow growth, reduced muscle mass, lower immunity, and weaken the heart and respiratory system. Protein gives us the energy to get up and go –and keep going. Keep in mind that it is vital to eat healthy protein that is free of hormones and antibiotics. Also, the majority of people in the U.S. eat more protein than is necessary. So focus more on getting higher quality versus more quantity. Each person is individual and may need different amounts of protein depending on their body and activity level.

* A complete protein source is one that provides all of the essential amino acids. Examples are animal-based foods such as meat, poultry, fish, milk, eggs, and cheese.
* An incomplete protein source is one that is low in one or more of the essential amino acids.
* Complementary proteins are two or more incomplete protein sources that together provide adequate amounts of all the essential amino acids. For example, rice and dry beans. Similarly, dry beans each are incomplete proteins, but together, these two foods can provide adequate amounts of all the essential amino acids your body needs.
* Do complementary proteins need to be eaten in the same meal? Research shows that your body can combine complementary proteins that are eaten within the same day.

Nuts, Seeds, Beans, and Tofu: alternative sources for healthy proteins

Nuts, Seeds, Beans, and TofuBeans, nuts, nut butters, peas, and soy products are good sources of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Many of the foods in this group provide iron, which is better absorbed when a source of vitamin C is consumed with the meal

Choose: Black beans, navy beans, garbanzos, lentils, and other beans. Nuts like almonds, walnuts and pecans. Soy products like tofu, soymilk, tempeh and veggie burgers. All of these are great sources of protein for vegetarians.

Avoid: Salted or sugary nuts; refried beans.

Dairy products and other sources for calcium and vitamin D

Dairy products provide a rich source of calcium, necessary for bone health. Most are fortified with vitamin D, which helps the small intestine absorb calcium. Calcium can also be found in dark green, leafy vegetables, such as kale and collard greens, as well as in dried beans and legumes.

Recommended calcium levels are 1000 mg per day, 1200 mg if you are over 50 years old. Take a vitamin D and calcium supplement if you don’t get enough of these nutrients from your diet.

Choose non-fat or low-fat dairy products that do not contain rBST (bovine growth hormone). If you're lactose-intolerant, choose lactose-free and lower-lactose products, such as lactose free milk, hard cheeses and yogurt.

Avoid full-fat dairy products or products from cows treated with rBST.

How to Grow & Harvest Your Own Green Tea Plant

Think it's hard to produce your own green tea? Think again. Here's how to grow and harvest your own tea plant.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could grow your own tea leaves at home? Not only would this save money, but you'd also reduce your risk of exposure to pesticides which are often found as contaminants on green tea leaves.

Growing your own green tea plant isn't as difficult as you might imagine. All of the non herbal teas are derived from the Camellia Sinensis plant. The difference in the taste and content of the teas lies in the way they're processed after the plant is grown.

You don't need much room to grow Camellia Sinensis, although you do need patience. The leaves of the plant shouldn't be plucked to be used until the plant is around three years of age.

Although you can grow the tea plant from the seed, it's far easier to propagate the plant from cuttings or to buy a nursery tree. You'll want to plant your tea plant in sandy soil for best results. Your tea plant will do well with the addition of occasional amounts of fertilizer and should be watered frequently when the weather is warm. The addition of mulch will help to reduce weeds and maintain soil moisture which is desirable for the Camellia Sinensis plant.

Once your plant is established, you'll want to start harvesting and processing your tea leaves. For green tea, it's important to harvest only the youngest tea leaves and buds. This usually involves plucking the terminal 3 leaves plus the terminal bud. After plucking, allow the leaves to dry away from direct contact with the sun for several hours.

Once the leaves are dry, it's time to steam or pan heat your green tea leaves. To pan heat the leaves, heat the leaves in a pan to a temperature of around 500 degrees F for 15 minutes while keeping the pan in continuous motion to prevent burning. They can be dried by placing them in an oven at a temperature of no more than 250 degrees F for around 10 minutes. The dried leaves can then be stored until you're ready to use them. Be sure to store them in a sealable container in a cool, dark place.

You can create different green tea flavors by adding herbs, dried fruits, or edible flowers to your green leaves before steeping them. This method will give you an endless supply of ways to enjoy green tea. Growing your own tea plant to make your own green tea drinks can be quite rewarding. Why not give it a try?

Healthy Nut Cake Recipe

Nut Cake

1/2 cup wheat germ
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup Sucanat or dark brown sugar
4 tbsp. poppy seeds
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup canola oil
2 tbsp. lecithin granules
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 cup walnuts
1/4 cup natural sesame seeds
--------------------------------

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine the dry ingredients then add the egg, milk and oil. Stir until just moist.

Pour into greased square pan. Bake for 50 min. or until toothpick comes out clean.

How To Lose Few Pounds?

When you start trying to lose weight it doesn´t matter whether you want to lose just a few pounds or 100 pounds. In both cases you have to do the same and go through the same. You have to set your goal and follow that till the end.

Tell Your Mind To Lose Weight
The very first thing you need to ask yourself is “Why do I want to lose weight”? The answers could be very simple like “I want to feel better” or “want to fit in a dress”. No matter what the answer is you have to answer because if you don´t then your mind doesn´t know if you are determined to lose weight or not. By answering that question you are basically telling your mind that you ARE going to lose weight. NEVER say “I´m TRYING to lose weight”. If you are only trying to then you don´t believe you can and then you wont lose weight. You have to believe in your weight loss and make your mind believe it to by saying I AM losing weight.

How Many Pounds Do You Want To Lose?
When you have convinced your mind that you are going to lose weight then you have to decide how many pounds you want to lose. If you want to lose only a few pounds then you can do that in a shorter time than if you have many pounds to lose. You also have to decide when your goal will be met, in how many weeks or months. This is very important because if you have certain day in front of you then it´s easier for you to keep going. It´s also very powerful to write down how many pounds you want to lose each week. Just get a pen and a paper and write down:

Week 1: x pounds
Week 2: x pounds

If you do that and hang it on the wall were you can see it all day long then you are always reminding your self of your final goal. It´s very powerful.

How To Lose These Pounds
How are you going to lose these pounds written down on your paper. Well here are few helpful tips for you to follow:

Take a fast walk for 30 minutes each day. It burns about 200 calories. You can also swim, cycle or even run. You can also do few exercises at home every day like sit-ups, press-ups, sit-downs and more like that. Just do them slowly and only do few of them at first but you will be amazed how soon you will manage to do more of them.

Try to avoid sugar and white flour as much as you can. There is sugar in almost everything, in your tomato sauce, your bread and your cereal. It´s hard to avoid it completely but try to choose food with low sugar in it. Buy whole wheat bread or even bake your own bread. You can find lot´s of healthy baking and cooking recipes online.

Eat more vegetables and fruits. It´s fine rule to eat one fruit in every meal, that makes 4 fruits a day which is quite easy and powerful. Try to put more salad on your plate than you are used to and less meat or potatoes. Use very little sauce or leave it out, they include lot of salt and calories.

Drink water. Try to put a bottle of water close to you while working and drink a lot of it. If you can´t then always drink 1-2 glasses of water before you eat. If you drink coffee then reduce it as much as you can. You could drink Green Tea instead, it helps your body to burn fat and has many very good benefits for you.

It´s better to eat often and eat less each time. Eat 5-6 small meals a day. A meal could be just an apple like late at night or in the coffee break in the morning at work.

How To Keep It Off Forever
These tips are not only to be used while you are losing weight. This is something you should carry out for the rest of your life. If you want to get better health and keep it good then you don´t want to go back to your earlier lifestyle. Make this as your new lifestyle. Although you have kids and family these steps are easy to follow and your family will gladly help you make these changes because they want what is best for you because they love you!
